The 1990's witnessed the rapid liberalization of Latin America's Telecom sector and the proliferation of investment in operating capacity, some of which turned out to be poorly spent. As a result, the industry suffers from a glut of long-haul and metropolitan technology infrastructure, while technology penetration continues to lag.

The wave of foreign direct investment across all sectors has brought historic investment in IT, particularly at the Enterprise level. Internet and cellular connectivity rates skyrocketed across the Americas in the 90's generating new hardware demand amongst the upper and middle classes. Moving forward, IT producers need to boost sales to SMEs and the working class consumer in order to sustain growth.

InfoAmericas combines both the IT and Telecom industries in its Technology practice. Since 1994, our team has advised clients in all of the leading segments of both industries. In IT, our consultants have studied the Enterprise, SME and Consumer markets for software, hardware and IT services. In the Telco arena, InfoAmericas has advised global leaders in services, infrastructure equipment and operating equipment.

Challenges

  • The lack of consumer and SME level credit limits the ability to push ICT adoption levels above their existing levels.

  • A weak, corrupted and under-funded judicial system does not enforce copyright laws to their fullest, making it difficult to sell consumer and SME level software.

  • A globally bankrupt telecom sector cannot afford to exploit many of the Telco niches that remain under-serviced in the region.

Opportunities

  • Latin America's top 10-15 cities were the focus of most technology companies' marketing efforts in the 90's but the region's 100+ mid-size cities (1 mm+ inhabitants) support impressive demand that is yet to be adequately serviced.

  • The foreign takeover of the region's financial industry is helping to recapitalize banks and boost credit to consumers and SMEs. ICT adoption can double if the middle market can buy on credit.

  • Foreign direct investment continues to grow in Mexico and is returning to South America as well as entering Central America. These enterprise clients bring with them impressive investment in IT and IT services as well as Telecom equipment.
